Hi all,
I took delivery of my 2012 Cooper S Coupe back in October, 2011. It's an automatic but didn't come with the paddle shifters. Anyway, I just got a letter from MINI NA stating that they will upgrade my car to have the paddle shifters installed for free. I just need to schedule an appointment at the MINI dealer. Did anybody else get this letter?
Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm wondering why they're doing this retrofit after the fact….

I too just took delivery of an automatic Cooper S. The paddle shifters are there.
I must admit I rarely use them, I prefer the "stick" shifting.
BTW- I've driven maybe 2 miles in "D" since I've owned the car–it's much to fun shifting up and down like a old cluch car.

Howdy, dave from up in Metroplex Mini area.
The paddle shifters were not on about 4 months worth of models in late 2011 and early 2012 due to supply issues. I am not sure if you can go back and get a new steering column or not.

"paddle shifters were not on about 4 months worth of models in late 2011 and early 2012 due to supply issues."
Apparently, my Coupe was one of those (Aug 2011 build date, took delivery in October 2011). MINI NA is going to retrofit the paddle shifters to my car now for free. I'm surprised they're doing this.
"Did you get your paddle shifters?"
I called BMW/MINI Clear Lake to schedule an appointment. They are ordering the parts and will install it when the parts come in.
We'll see how this goes…..

So I finally got my [free] paddle shifters installed. Mini Clear Lake did the work. The upgrade involved replacing the whole steering wheel and a wire harness. The computer had to be reprogrammed to allow the paddle shifters to function.
"Manual" shifting is very quick – almost no delay. The driving experience is awesome.
One downside to this upgrade, it seems like the reprogramming has affected the burble I used to get when downshifting… it doesn't burble nearly as much as before.
The mechanic told me that approx 1500 automatic 2012 Minis are eligible for this upgrade… owners should get a letter in the mail. If you have an automatic 2012 withOUT the paddle shifters, and haven't received the letter, go to the dealership anyway and have it done! Well worth it.
