As mentioned at our January meeting, I will be putting on a MINI Mod day at my house on Saturday, April 17th. I have all the tools needed to do most of the common bolt-on mods. I have a fair amount of experience modding my own 2005 MCS, doing the following mods in my garage/driveway: rear sway bar, front big brake kit, cold air intake, aftermarket exhaust, camber plates, and of course all the typical maintenance tasks: oil change, serpentine belt replacement, replace brake pads, bleed brakes, etc. If you have always want to do a mod on your car, but felt a little timid about it, this is your opportunity to do the mod with help from your follow HMMS members.
I am posting this now so you will give some thought as to what type of mods you would like to do and buy the parts. Please post here what mod you would like to do so 1) I'll be sure we'll have the expertise and tools available to successfully do the mod and 2) to make sure we have enough time to do the all the planned mod in a day's time. Mods will be done on a first post, first serve basis.
I'll welcome any other experienced modders to come and lend a hand.
I'll post more details regarding starting time and directions to my house as we get closer to April 17th.
I'll also have a barbecue dinner afterwards, and everyone is invited to that, even the non-modders!
Let the wrenching begin!

Jeff, put us down for the grub! Also (and maybe John can answer this), would a front sway bar do anything to tame the notorious R56 torque steer? I have LSD, but it's still a bit dramatic. Besides, it would take 5 seconds off my autocross times, right?
|
Zippeee!'s an '07 R56 MCS, delivered in February, 2007–one of the first in the country! We now have over 59,000 miles together. Yikes! That's a lot for someone who works out of her home–must be a bunch of pure motoring.

If I recall, a front sway bar is a major undertaking,… not for a mod day. Even then, I am not sure it would help with torque steer. Best solution for torque steer would be a 135i ! Yowser!
A rear sway bar would probably help your times a bit and that is a "relatively" easy install. I have closely watched that done on both Toppers.
I am wondering about installing a larger intercooler at mod day. Or maybe just new brake pads. hmmm
Thanks, Jeff, for offering to host this and lend your expertise!

A 135i? What's that?
Nah, I don't want another Bimmer. It's bad enough that Ken's got the hots for one now–he has the idea that we "need" a wagon. At least it's not an SUV.

I am all in for this one! I just finished putting my invidia cat back system on (I love it) and also changing my oil. I have the 15% ALTA pulley bought and was planning on attacking this in february or march when it warms up some. But I may just wait until April if this is something you think we can tackle in the mod day. I would feel more comfortable completing this at the mod day then on my own. Is their another mod that I should consider when adding the 15% pulley (i.e. upgrading spark plugs, etc?). I was also planning on completing the short throw upgrade as well. Will these two be doable on the mod day?
On a side not Janelle and I haven't been able to make it back to another meeting because we have been soo busy with our newborn, but we are trying to make one again soon. We are planning to make it in February, this time we will bring the kids .

Avelino-
The front pulley is a tough one only because the stock pulley is really a bear to take off. I had a local shop take off my stock pulley and put on an Craven about three years ago. They broke one puller, tried a second one, and still had to beat the stock pulley off! This one mod I would leave to the professionals. Also, I don't have a puller to take off the stock pulley. It is a great mod however once it is done. It's gets you the "best bang for the buck".
We could do the short shift kit. I've been thinking about doing on my own car, but wanted to try one out first.
Although it is not necessary, you may want to change to one step colder spark plugs after you do your pulley change. I've got Brisk plugs, P/N BRSK-DR12S.
Looking forward to seeing you and the family at February's meeting!

Jeff,
Thanks for the info. I think I might try and tackle the pulley myself still; I was planning on taking my time and getting it down in a day or two. I have heard getting the stock pulley off is the biggest challenge so I may have to rethink doing it myself, but in general I have found I like doing the work myself if it's possible. I will definitely look at getting the colder spark plugs when it comes time to change the pulley. I think I will tackle this during the first week of March, we will see the outcome .
But put me down for the short shift mod, maybe the spark plugs as well if you think that is doable. I should have my pulley in by that time so it would be a good time to tackle the spark plugs. Do you have the invidia exhaust? I have heard that there are issues with some kits with the fit being difficult due to the resonator from the invidia. Any suggestions as to which kit to get?

Avelino-
We can certianly do the short shift and spark plugs. It will be fun!
I have the Invidia N1 cat-back exhaust. I bought it used with about 2000 miles on it, and had no trouble installing it.

I thought from your earlier post you already bought and installed the Invidia exhaust. Did you have problems with the exhaust?

Avelino,
I believe there were some problems with the earlier Invidia kits going on earlier model year MCS. You might find some details on NAM threads.
Not sure where the break point was, but the Invidia I ordered for my 05 MCS went on without any fit up adjustments necessary. Beautiful system and out of this world sound! I miss it!
Jeff,
I am starting to think about changing out the brakes and lines, not just the pads. Any suggestions?

John-
The major brands I've heard of, and seen comments on NAM, are Stoptech, Wilwood and TSW. First consideration is determining which style will fit behind your wheels. I couldn't use the Stoptechs because they were too large to fit behind my wheel without a bunch of spacers. I've been really happy with the Wilwoods, however. TSW's brakes are made smaller to fit 16" wheels. This may be a consideration for your AX wheels. Stoptech and Willwood provides templates that you can print out, cut out, and slip behind your wheel to make sure you have clearance. TSW may also have a template, but I haven't looked for it.
I changed only my front brakes, since they do most of the work (and it's expensive enough just to do the fronts). I got my brakes from TCE (http://www.tceperformanceproducts.com). The mod was pretty easy. I did in about 3 hours, including changing to SST lines, and bleeding the brake system. In fact, I had to bleed it twice because I didn't get all the air out the first time. I bought a power bleeder, which made it easy for me to change the brake fluid by myself.

Jeff/John,
I put on my invidia exhaust and I absolutely love it, however, I did have fit up issues. For some reason the inside hangers on my 04/04 build MCS face "side to side" meaning the inside hangers on the exhaust must be pointing 90 degrees from the front/rear of the vehicle for the aftermarket exhaust to fit properly. All four hangers on my invidia exhaust system point forward and back so only the two outside hangers fit. I am currently working on a fix; but its pretty solid with only the two oustide hangers installed.
My question was on which Short Shift kit would fit with the aftermarket resonator that comes with the invidia. I have read some threads on NAM that state there are some issues with fit as the resonator gets in the way somehow.
I will definitely be in for the Short shift mod and spark plugs, maybe by then I will treat my self to a Whalen Shift Knob, i think that would be the cherry on top .

Yeah, I recall reading about the change in hangers between '04 and '05. You might find yourself a good welder, who will cut off the hangers and weld them in the proper direction.
I won't be much help in the selection of a short shifter. Post your question on NAM, and I'm sure you'll get an answer within minutes!

This past weekend we realized that the Spring beach cleanup is on April 24th, which conflicts with the proposed Mod day. The beach cleanup date can't be moved for several reasons, so the Mod Day date needs to change.
I had initially recommended April 17th, but since that was the same weekend as the MS 150, a member asked if the Mod day could be moved, which was when I selected April 24th.
So, what are your thoughts about May 1st , or earlier in April? I'm pretty flexible. Avelino & Ted- Since you expressed a desire to do mods, your voice is important.

Jeff,
I am good for early April or early May, both are great for me. Which Short shift kit are you leaning towards? I would love to eventually do the BBK but man, thats a pricey upgrade :) I may be needing new pads soon, so maybe I can justify it at that point.

The date of this event has changed to April 17th, since April 24th is reserved for the Adopt-a-Beach cleanup. There is plenty of room for more modders! Or, if you just want to do some maintenance, oil changes, etc., we can do those too!

Hey, Jeff,
I think I am OK for April 17th and am still thinking of new brake pads if MoTW doesn't do as pat of Topper's next service, ande SS lines.
If someone else wants to do something and your driveways getstoo crowded, I can do mine another time at home.

Jeff, I've just found a temp gauge for the R56, that is DIY and doesn't require a computer flash. Could you help with this one? It's steering column mounted, and I can give you more details if you need them.

I haven't bought it yet–just checking to see if it's something you can help with.
